Saint Stephen is a remarkable figure in the history of the Church, recognized as the first martyr and one of the seven deacons chosen to serve the early Christian community. His story is not only a testament to unwavering faith but also a profound lesson in devotion and charity to God.

A Deacon Chosen to Serve

In the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 6:1-6), Stephen was selected alongside six others to be a deacon, tasked with assisting the apostles in ministering to the material needs of the community, especially widows and the poor. Stephen was described as "a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit" (Acts 6:5) and "full of grace and power" (Acts 6:8), standing out for his piety, wisdom, and ability to bear witness to the faith.

A Bold Witness Amidst Opposition

With zeal for spreading the Good News, Stephen debated with those who opposed Christianity. Unable to withstand his wisdom and the Spirit speaking through him, his opponents conspired against him, falsely accusing him of blasphemy against God and Moses.

Brought before the Sanhedrin, Stephen fearlessly defended his faith. He delivered a powerful speech that traced the history of salvation and rebuked his accusers' hard-heartedness. He pointed to the fulfillment of the Scriptures in Jesus Christ, challenging his listeners to embrace the truth they had rejected.

A Martyr’s Death

Stephen’s boldness provoked the fury of his audience. He was dragged out of the city and stoned to death. Even in his final moments, Stephen exemplified Christ-like forgiveness, praying, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit” and “Lord, do not hold this sin against them” (Acts 7:59-60). His last words of forgiveness reflect his deep faith and unconditional love, even for those who sought his life.

Significance and Legacy

Saint Stephen is a shining example of steadfastness in faith, even in the face of persecution and death. He serves as a model of a life lived fully for God, embodying courage and charity.
